Club History
The recent discovery of a silver trophy ,with a plaque dated 1908, for the Scarborough Lawn Tennis Club Mens Singles is the earliest known item of memorabilia we have.
The club was housed at the former home of the 'Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Club', at the now council run Filey Road Sports Centre, Scarborough.
In its heyday many of the world's top-class players played at the Filey Road tennis club, including Fred Perry, Pancho Gonzales, Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, the first man to win the Grand Slam American Don Budge, Jack Kramer, Rod Laver, and Stan Smith.
As a matter of interest, John Butterworth was the first customer of 'Sydenham's' Sports Shop when it opened in Scarborough, over 40 years ago, and it is still there in Huntriss Row!
The club has played, and continues to play a key role in the development of tennis throughout the community. We currently have 68 tennis members.
Historically the club has been very successful in producing four under 18 Junior Champions in boys and girls as well as one Wimbledon Boys Doubles Runner Up.
We run 10 teams including 3 Mens, 1 Ladies and 2 Junior Teams in the Driffield League, 1 Mixed Team in the Scarborough and District League, 1 Yorkshire League Team, 1 National Club League Team and 1 Veterans Team.
The programme below has been kindly loaned by Mr Doug Cooper from Buckinghamshire, whose wife to be, Irene Williams competed in this Tournament - beating the 1st seed in the Ladies Singles! If anyone knows the final results of the 1951 Ladies Doubles and Singles please let me know!
I have scanned all 40 pages, the image quality is excellent and shows the lists of competitors and the events' draws, contact me if you would like any emailing to you.

This has been scanned from the 1951 Programme, (below) and I have scanned all the full pages which show the Mens & Ladies singles & doubles, the Boys & Girls singles and the Mixed Doubles from 1884 to 1950.
